They removed all of the ambient sounds and the music from this 'version'. To put them back in and make the steam version's ambient sound work, you have to download illegal CD images. Or you haev to download sound files that are illegally ripped from the original CD's and re-packed for Dark-places game engine. They did the same thing to the Mission packs, and to all of the Quake 2 titles. Apearently they did not want to pay the extra licence fees. They are using the 'Redbox CD information is not available with Steam DRM crap.

Seriously people, do not reward Bethesda for sodomizing classic old games like this. Save your money, and your time.

NO this is not the same as playing the original Quake on Dosbox. The ambient sounds are a major part of the atmosphere. They are a major part of the game. I was referring to mounting the Rom by itself, which is how I used to play Quake back then. Yes the CD audio missing is a huge part of the game, but simply installing the patch is a better solution than not buying the game to begin with, since the options then are downloading it 'illegally' online, or getting Console ports.
