Installing Non Mortise Hinge

To locate the hinges on the sides of the cabinet, I placed a piece of double-sided tape on each hinge (Figure 1). Then I pressed the door against the side of the cabinet, using an 1⁄8″-thick shim to provide clearance, as shown in Figure 2. With the hinges taped in place, I carefully opened the door and used the hinge as a template to drill the screw holes (Figure 3). These are nice, attractive hinges and stronger than they would appear. But as others warned, be wary of the screws. I was screwing them into white oak and they heads broke on the first few, almost ruining the door that I had worked so hard to make. Here's what to do.

Use a self-centering drill bit; drill out the pilot hole carefully and make sure that you have a good, clean pilot hole. Dip the screw into paste wax and get it coated well; Hand screw it into the hole with a no. 1 point screwdriver head. Screw it slowly and carefully. That method worked well and had no trouble after that. These hinges certainly aren't top of the line but for the price I have no complaints. I installed four sets on some shaker style cabinets and so far they work well.

Installation was simple with a basic spacing jig and some double sided tape. There is some play in the hinge and one set required some flattening of the leaves in a vice but again for the price what do you expect. I had no issues with the screws like many other reviewers but I was using poplar, predrilling with a self centering bit, and turning in by hand. I don't know what the fuss is all about with the poor quality screws. I have never had a problem with Rockler non-mortise hinges. If I have any doubt about the original screws, I first drill a correct pilot hole and then use a steel screw of the same size and run it into the pilot holes to cut the threads, take the steel screw out and install the screw that came with the hinges. I have used these types of Rockler hinges on several projects and have had no problems with them to date.

I am quite satisfied with the product. I had used non-mortise hinges similar to these (also purchased from Rockler)several years ago to mount a series of cherry shutters.

Those hinges have lasted very well, with absolutely no sagging, even over the three-foot span of the shutter pairs. Relatively easy to mount, far easier than mortising something as small as these shutter stiles. Good buy, good price, and Rockler's is the only source I found. Only option I would like to see is the availability of removable pins (in addition to the standard fixed pins). The previous hinges had removable pins as an option, and they greatly facilitate mounting to and removal from the window supports. I purchased these hinges for a set of maple cabinets in our family room. The fit and style are great but the screws are garbage.
